Umbria Innovazione serves the region of Umbria as a unique and comprehensive reference point for innovation and research strategies and actions at the regional level, by creating a critical mass of resources and knowledge, to help raise the profile of the local system to the outside community and to take part in national and European research networks.
Mission and objectives of the organization:
The PARCO TECNOLOGICO DELL'UMBRIA - SITECH was established in January 2000 following the merger between Parco Scientifico Tecnologico of Terni and Sitech.
The two organization united their resources in order to establish a unique and coherent reference centre for innovation and research strategies and actions at the regional level, by creating a critical mass of resources and knowledge, to help raise the profile of the local system to the outside community and to take part in national and European research networks.
Process and product innovation
The PARCO TECNOLOGICO DELL'UMBRIA - SITECH directly manages some support measures for local manufacturers involved with projects to improve their organization and use of technology, reducing the time needed to access assistance and increasing understanding of companies' individual needs.
Quality
PTU - Sitech's is active in the area of quality. Projects related to this topic aim to encourage the introduction of the Quality System to Umbrian SMEs, or to improve those already in place. The goal is to improve competitiveness through the reduction of "non-quality" costs and better quantitative and qualitative performance in critical business management areas
Information and awareness
The main activities for dissemination of innovation and new technologies concern:- data bank research and studies, to meet clients' requirements for a customized, real time and updated information; - Technological Innovation Bulletin, B.I.T., a 48 page bi-monthly magazine providing suggestions and news about EU programs, industrial patents, research and development matters, technology sector news, laws and technical specifications. The Bulletin is sent to more than 4000 Umbrian companies;- Tecnodays, an annual event that brings together meeting of economic and institutional innovation originators and users;- Innovation Relay Centre, part of a European network, promotes innovation, disseminates research results and offers consultancy and support services to local businesses.
Research
PTU - Sitech's staff works to improve co-operation among the many actors of the entrepreneurial environment. They facilitate access to projects and research results, take part directly in scientific co-operation programs and in national and European networks for technology transfer, facilitate collaboration and practical exchanges with Industrial Research Centres, Universities and public research agencies.
Advanced communication
Dissemination of information about new technologies is still one of PTU - Sitech's priorities, to help companies move toward the new opportunities offered by the New Economy. This activity started in 1993 with the experimental provision of telematic services to Umbrian SMEs. It has continued since then with the supported introduction of advanced communication systems and e-business solutions to pilot companies.
Objectives
In a nutshell, the strategic objective of the PARCO TECNOLOGICO DELL'UMBRIA - SITECH is to promote economic development and the qualification of business production processes, increasing the competitiveness of the whole regional environment. All of this is accomplished through activities aimed at technology transfer and development, innovation, research and services of the high-tech service industry.
Activities
- The main activities to achieve this objective are:
- The transfer of information and technological know-how to companies;
- The development of instruments to support business improvement and innovation;
- The qualification of the entire system and of the research and technological transfer originators, and strengthening their ties to the manufacturing system;
- Direct participation in scientific co-operation programs;
- Facilitating access for the entrepreneurial system to European, national and regional funds for research and innovation
Umbria Innovazione has coordinated several projects focusing on SMEs in the areas of innovation management techniques, quality, improvement of business process, system integration on subcontracting networks, including, among others, the MINT project (European DG XIII - Innovation), and MAIN (European DG XIII). It is now a partner in the Interreg RDA-Net CEDA 2 (Regional Development Agencies Network in the Central European and Danubian Areas) project; coordinator of two Innovative Actions in the ERDF project “Umbri@ in.action”: Action 2.4, Identification and Valorisation of New Content for E-based Services, and Action 2.5, Creating Awareness and Promoting the Introduction of Digital Technologies in SMEs; and core partner of the European Network of Excellence for functional nanocomposites, Nanofun-Poly. In addition, Umbria Innovazione is responsible for IRC (Innovation Relay Centre) activities in the region, helping SMEs identify their technological needs and find the most appropriate technologies to satisfy them and offering assistance to SMEs to commercially exploit their own research and development results.
